Farrell (1882-1935) came from a distinguished Glasgow family. He initially studied civil engineering and as an artist was largely self taught.
He enlisted as a sapper at the outbreak of the war, with the Royal Engineers Railway Troops Depot, but was later discharged due to ill health.
In December 1916, he returned to the Front as a War Artist, at first attached to the Highland Light Infantry and later to the 51st (Highland) Division.
He was supported by the Ministry of Munitions, the Admiralty, and also the Lord Provost of Glasgow.
