Grant's father and both his grandfathers served with the Royal Marines. He joined them in 1961 aged 17, and served for 26 years. He saw service in Yemen, East Africa, Aden, Singapore, USA and Norway.
His civilian career was as a consultant, helping new businesses. He was a keen sailor.
